This challenge is designed to get you more prospects and customers by building your list.
This may be your very first list or your tenth – I always advocate segmenting your lists by types of niche, prospect, customer, offer and so on.
Segmentation means you will be sending the right information and offers to the right people which is the essence of good marketing.
To do that successfully, and to create the most effective lead magnet or tripwire offer, you need to know your prospect or customer inside out.
To help you do that, you can download my Target Audience Worksheet here and complete it.
Even if this is the umpteenth time you’ve heard me say that please do so again for the purposes of this exercise. It is vital that you are laser-targeted in your approach if you are to succeed in this challenge.
To help you complete your worksheet, I suggest you (ethically!) stalk your prospects and customers by visiting Facebook groups and forums they might frequent, reading what they have to say and what they post on other social media platforms and by conducting searches on platforms like Amazon and Pinterest for relevant terms.
If, for example, you want to create a lead magnet to build a list of people interested in copywriting so you could market your new course to them, then you would type in relevant search terms such as ‘learn copywriting’ to the search bars and read reviews and comments on Amazon, look at what people are pinning on Pinterest and what their hopes, fears and frustrations are in relevant Facebook groups.
It is always a good idea to have your core offer in mind when creating your tripwire or lead magnet. By that I mean either an offer you have created or an evergreen one you are promoting.
If you just want to build a list to market multiple affiliate offers to them in a niche, still make sure it is as tightly targeted as possible, i.e. people interested in weight loss post baby, in email marketing, in learning how to write copy that sells and so on.
Bear in mind that this challenge is the perfect kickstart to you exploring a new niche or market if you wish.
While you are learning as much as you can about your ideal customer or target audience, I also want you to be thinking about whether a lead magnet or a tripwire offer would work better for that particular audience or whether it should be both.
A lead magnet or a tripwire both function at the top of your funnel but in different ways. You can also have a lead magnet that leads to a tripwire offer. Let’s first take a quick look at the difference between the two so you can decide if you are going to create one or both.
A lead magnet is a giveaway to entice someone to sign up to your list. I find that short, easily consumable and instantly actionable lead magnets work best. What is vital for both this and a tripwire is that they should bring about a highly desirable transformation for your customer or prospect.
Ideally, you should offer them something they can execute in a few simple steps that will give them one instant win and not just any old instant win but one that will mean a lot to them.
How will you know what that win might be? Easy. You get to know your target audience or ideal customer in the way I suggest here so you know exactly what will make a big difference to them if only they can achieve it…
And the job of your lead magnet or tripwire is to enable them to do just that.
With a lead magnet, you will then have to nurture your prospects towards becoming buyers with value-infused emails that lead them to a paid offer.
This can be a low-ticket tripwire offer priced at between 7-20 dollars or it can be considerably more than that, depending on what market you are in, the value your offer represents to them and their willingness to pay for such an offer.
Again, you will learn all of this from getting to know your target audience intimately.
You can skip the lead magnet stage and immediately start building a list of buyers but you have to be confident that your prospects will fulfil the above criteria. You will also have to ensure your copy is enticing enough to get cold traffic to buy from you unless you market it to your existing audience.
What I want you to do today is complete your worksheet and research and then make a decision as to what you are going to create throughout the rest of this challenge based on everything I have taught you above:
Will it be a lead magnet, a tripwire offer or both?
Tomorrow we will start building those lead magnets and offers so you need to be prepared…
And armed with all the information you gain today, you will be!
