Ah…the niche question. Never mind how you pronounce it (I say neesh, you say nitch)…how do you pin down the right one(s) in the first place?

Your niche, if you don’t know, is the market segment you choose as the focus of your business.

You can have more than one although I would argue that choosing too many dilutes your focus and therefore your results.

There are many suggestions out there as to how to choose your niche but I like the simple approach. It’s one I learned right at the beginning of my online career and I still use it. It goes like this…

Take a look around you.

Where are you?

If you’re at home or work, what do you see?

If you’re engaged in a leisure or learning activity, what are you doing?

If you’re dealing with a problem right now, what is it?

Essentially, start from your own life and work outwards. If you see something in your own home that you use every day, your air fryer or fitness ball for example, then there’s a niche right there.

You could create a product around it – an air fryer cookbook or a fitness program.

You could promote those and similar products.

You get the idea…

It’s far easier to start with what you know than pick a niche where you have a steep learning curve.

You can always add those on later but, especially at first, I always think you’re better off choosing something that you see/feel/hear every day because chances are, plenty of other people do too.

Of course, your niche needs to solve some kind of problem or add some kind of value to people’s lives – we’re talking pain/pleasure here.

Solving pain tends to be an easier sell than increasing pleasure simply because it’s more urgent but there is profit in both.

I would never say that my approach is perfect or necessarily the right one for you so here are some more resources to help you pick that perfect niche.
